Dear Friend in Christ,
The Vestry of the Church of St. Paul in the Desert in Palm Springs, California greets you and invites you to read the following profile in the same spirit in which it was written, with prayerful, hopeful and discerning hearts.
The Church of St. Paul in the Desert was the first Episcopal church in the Coachella Valley and was established in 1939. We are pioneers of community outreach, one of the first churches to embrace the LGBTQ community, the homeless and the marginalized. Our parish is a worship-centered community embracing Christ’s call to love and celebrate diversity. We are the “parent church” of two Episcopal parishes in the Coachella Valley. Our Lay Leadership and Lay Ministries seek deeper spiritual connections as well as greater diversity and hope our new rector with God’s help will bring training, strategies and best practices.
Our congregation has a higher average age than most parishes and is also blessed with a large LGBTQ population. Although we celebrate this diversity, we recognize that the lifeblood of any church is its youth and young adults. We hope to foster the growth of young families’ participation in our parish, and we were pursuing this endeavor by reimagining our Children’s Ministry when the pandemic hit. We also recognize and appreciate the growing demographic shift in our Valley and seek to expand our outreach to the Latino community. We have always considered ourselves to be one extensive family, and we look forward to attracting and welcoming new members to our parish from these growing segments of our Valley residents.
Although some feel a sense of loss and concern over the retirement of our Rector of 30 years and change can feel uncertain, we have a sense of openness and curiosity about whom God has chosen for us.
We invite you to explore this spiritual home where we challenge ourselves to grow emotionally and spiritually and to share our love with the broader community of which we are a part. We look forward to meeting you!
Your Friends in Christ,
St Paul in the Desert Vestry Members
