We thank you for considering the Church of St. Paul in the Desert
Our church was founded in 1939 by congregants who previously worshiped in a shared community sanctuary. Although the current church location was originally considered the outskirts of town, the neighborhood has evolved over the years to become the heart of the city – an area where many former film and entertainment stars made their desert homes. As a tourist mecca, Palm Springs has many part time residents from across the U.S. and Canada who winter in our warm weather. The summers on the other hand can be uncomfortably warm until you adjust to our desert climate. If you have not been to Palm Springs before, you are in for a treat in many ways. It is a town full of history descended from humble beginnings with the Aqua Caliente Native American nation. From its origin, the natural mineral springs and fresh water from the mountains have provided a life full of God’s grace. Moving forward 100 years, we have become a vacation paradise with more than 100 golf courses, miles of scenic hiking and biking trails. a vast exhibition of Mid-Century Modern architecture, world class museums, restaurants and spas drawing visitors from near and far.
Through the years St. Paul in the Desert has been known for its warm. welcoming. and inviting spirit that echoes throughout our campus. You will find a congregation woven together by many nationalities, cultures, and lifestyles. Our parish hosts several events that bring the city and our congregation together. For over 20 years, our kitchen has been used to feed those in need through many of our partnerships and devoted outreach ministries. All of God’s children are welcome at St. Paul in the Desert.
We have been blessed with sustaining leadership for many years, and while some are not sure of the future, most are looking forward to the gifts our next Rector will bring. Our most recent assessment tool indicates that we seek strong preaching, strategic leadership, pastoral care, and thoughtful management. Our parish is seriously interested in ministries that will attract families and children, variety in music, new opportunities for worship while invigorating our traditions, and reaching out to new cultures and people – both new, and not-so-new – in our community. We look forward to fresh thoughts for nurturing our spiritual journey, ministries for and by lay members, new friendships and collaborations with the marginalized, finding the right path to financial security, firm guidance when needed, and a warm embrace of love sent to us through the Holy Spirit.
A parish full of rich tradition, rooted deep in faith and full of compassionate hearts, we find ourselves in a time of transition during much uncertainty in the world. We are not afraid and will continue to be grateful for the abundant gifts that God provides us. We know that God most assuredly knows who will be called to lead God’s children and we look forward to finding out who it will be.
If you want to be with us, we pray for you. If you are drawn to meet us, we will embrace you. If you are the one God calls to St. Paul’s, we will be blessed to welcome you home.
