COVID Update from the office of our Bishop
Bishop Susan has lifted many COVID restrictions pertaining to the way we can now worship together, following the advice of the Diocesan Public Health Task Force. Reservations, occupancy limits and social distancing are no longer required. We will continue to ask that you wear a mask while on the church campus if you have not been vaccinated (but we will not require verification). For now, Communion will be administered with bread only. Sharing a common chalice is still not permitted. More information will be forthcoming as it is available.
St. Paul’s Latino Ministry Committee invites church members to join a meeting / dinner on Monday, July 19 at 6:00 PM, at the home of Bonnie Stroock, 254 Loch Lomond, Rancho Mirage, 92270. Come and discuss our fall program, eat enchiladas, and read a Spanish Compline service.

A Short Story About Our Beautiful Stained-glass Windows

We are certain you have all come to love the stained-glass windows at the Church of St Paul in the Desert. We are very proud of them.
One Thursday in May, when we were recording a worship service in the sanctuary, a couple came into the church and sat quietly watching while we finished filming. They were from out of town, and these visitors – Mr. and Mrs. Raymond – had come to the church specifically to see the stained-glass windows.
In the time we spent together, we learned Mrs. Raymond’s uncle, Charles E. Brown, is the author of the booklet published in 1982 that describes the windows in detail and features color photos of each. (Copies of the booklet are available from the pew pockets.) She said her uncle spent six years researching and writing the booklet; her family had seen the published photos but had never actually seen the windows in person. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond stayed with us for about an hour marveling at the beauty of the windows and what they represent.
Following their visit, we received this note from Mrs. Raymond:
“My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the church on Thursday! Thank you so much for welcoming us, even though we interrupted your recording of the Sunday Service. My uncle, Chuck Brown, loved the church and was proud of the booklet he authored detailing the stories of your beautiful windows. I have talked with his daughter, Mary, who lives in New York, and she is delighted that we were able to see the windows again. She is especially happy that you still use her dad’s booklet as a part of your ministry. Thank you so much for your warm welcome.”
July Book Club
The next Book Club meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 3, 2021, at 1:00 PM via Zoom. Meeting access information will follow later. For August, Book Club has selected Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro. Klara, an Artificial Friend, a robot, with outstanding observational qualities, is the narrator of this novel set in the uncomfortably near future. Seeing the world from Klara’s point of view is to be reminded what it looks like when viewed through technology.

A message from our Senior Warden

As I announced to the congregation at the 10:30 service last Sunday, the Vestry had a full day of discernment on Saturday, June 19, to determine our choice for the next Rector of St. Paul in the Desert. The day was filled with prayer and was, without a doubt, a day led by the Holy Spirit. I am looking forward to working with Bishop Susan and Rev. Gwynn as we move through the remainder of the process to the calling of our Rector. The days and weeks ahead will be new territory for most of us and I am offering my thanks in advance for your support and patience.
The Transition Committees have been an amazing group of people who have given countless hours to ensuring the candidates were selected with confidence of qualifications. Clinton Carbon and the Transition Chairs presented the Vestry with three very strong candidates for discernment and each of them had many gifts to offer the congregation. The decision was difficult, but we feel our choice most closely matches the vision of our parishioners, based on the survey you completed at the beginning of the Transition process.
St. Paul in the Desert has a history of embracing the life of Christ through its leadership and parishioners during times when the future can be uncertain for many. As we come out of the pandemic, we are all excited to see St. Paul in the Desert become even more diverse and present in the lives of friends, both old and new.
We are blessed to have been an integral part of the Palm Springs community for 82 years. As we call our new Rector, we set the stage to continue that tradition into the next 82 years, and beyond.

The candidate visits have concluded, and all materials have been handed over to the Vestry for discernment. Once a decision has been made, the following steps must be completed:
- The candidate must say yes to the offer and the compensation package agreed upon.
- The Bishop must give final approval.
- Three forms of Diocesan paperwork must be completed and signed by the Senior Warden, the Candidate, and the Bishop.
- Announcements must be coordinated between our parish, the new rector’s current parish and the Diocese in order to go public with the naming of the candidate as our new Rector.
We hope to have a new Rector announced by mid-July.
This is my last Transition Update. It has been an honor for me and the Transition Committee to represent the members of this parish in this important endeavor. Since our commissioning January 25, 2020, we have worked through a pandemic and mostly online to create the essential documents that are the cornerstone of the search process: the Parish Profile and the Office of Transition Ministry Portfolio Form. Our work to find candidates to meet the criteria set forth in those documents is complete and the selection of the next Rector rests with our Vestry. Thanks to The Rev. Canon Gwynn Lynch, Canon to the Ordinary, the Parish Office Staff and countless others who answered our calls for participation, assistance, and support. We ask for your prayers of thanksgiving for the service of our Interim Rector, The Rev. Canon David L. Caffrey and the members of the Transition Committee listed:

Compassionate Care Task Force
Our diocesan task force on compassionate care for victims of clergy sexual misconduct seeks to connect with those who have experienced misconduct. If you have reported clergy sexual misconduct and have information about the reporting or post-reporting experience that could be helpful to their work, please refer to the task force members, all of whom are listed on the diocesan website: Task-Force. All reported incidences are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly and confidentially. Bullying Behavior Not Welcome Here
At St. Paul in the Desert we welcome all worshipers to a place that is free of violence and bullying.
Physical, verbal or emotional violence against others or against oneself is not acceptable because of our understanding of what it means to follow Jesus. Please let Jesus’ command to love your neighbor as yourself be your guide.
“It Gets Better” is a series of video messages to encourage Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, or Transgender youth and let them know that they are loved as they are.
“A Blessing for Those Who Are Bullied” was written by the Rt. Rev. Steven Charleston, a Bishop of the Episcopal Church.
It is not enough to say “NO” to bullies. It is important to stand up for people and to provide resources for those who have been the targets.
Fraud Email Alert
A recurring threat to churches is email-based impersonation scams targeting key personnel. The scheme involves cybercriminals mimicking clergy or other staff through the use of phishing emails. Criminals typically pose as personnel in positions of authority and ask victims to perform money transfers, pay invoices, or to send the attacker sensitive data. Scammers will often manipulate the “from” email address and name so that it appears to be coming from someone you know.
Churches and dioceses across The Episcopal Church and across other denominations have been a target of these email impersonation attacks. Scammers use a free email account (such as Gmail) and register it with an impersonated name. They then send an email to an unsuspecting recipient asking for immediate help in order to get a task done (such as purchasing a gift card or wiring money). Attention to detail can be a lot of help in combating cases of impersonation. Users should check sender details carefully. Any suspicious email message should be investigated before replying. Also, proper attention should be given to the message content, including attachments and URLs.
While there is no way to stop these scams, you can minimize risk by taking these steps:
- Check the return email address. If the address doesn’t match the name of the sender, be wary.
- Never open attachments from unknown sources.
- Be wary of generically addressed emails like “Dear Friend” or Dear Customer.”
- If there are links in the email, hover over them without clicking on them. This will show where the link will actually take you.
- Be wary of email with grammatical or spelling errors in the text.
- Check the address at the bottom of the email. If it says ”Pastor Jim” and Jim never goes by “Pastor,” it’s fake.
Finally, if after all these steps it looks safe and the sender is asking for money or access to secure data, call the person directly to get verification.
Your best defense for this is to simply delete the email; do not click on any links or reply to the sender.
