Pride weekend worship service schedule changes

As has been our practice in recent years, we will adjust our normal weekend service schedule so our worshipers can avoid the traffic and congestion created by the Palm Springs Pride Parade here in our neighborhood.  Our single weekend worship service (with music) will be 4:00 PM Saturday, November 6.  There will be no service on Sunday, November 7.

Palm Springs Pride & Veterans’ Day Parades

We are organizing our contingent in the PS Pride Parade, Sunday Nov. 7th and in the Veterans’ Day Parade, Sunday Nov. 11th.  Your support and participation in demonstrating who we are as a faith community by our involvement in these public events is greatly appreciated. Walkers, riders and drivers are needed.

Sign-up at the information table outside the church before or after services or contact George at gholliday@dc.rr.com. There will be some seats available in cars for individuals who need to ride.   Oh, don’t forget to wear your Parish T-shirt!  (We have a limited supply of Parish Tshirts available for purchase. The cost is $10, and the shirts can be purchased at the parish office during regular business hours.)

The PARADES / SPECIAL EVENTS TEAM is recruiting additional volunteers.  Consider joining this fun-loving group and help plan and organize St. Paul’s involvement in parades and other community events.  We’re hoping to expand the scope of this ministry in the coming months and will welcome creative and energetic additions to our team.  If you’re interested, please contact George at gholliday@dc.rr.com

Interfaith Pride Kabbalat Shabbat

People of all faith communities and beliefs are invited to join the 2021 Pride Welcoming of the Sabbath Service on Friday, November 5, at 6:30 PM, both in person and on Facebook Live. The pluralistic online prayer service with a core of Jewish liturgy will include song, ancient poetry, contemporary readings, and meditation led by members of our local clergy (including our own Rev. Jessie and Rev. Dan).

Daylight Saving Time Ends

Fall Back – Sunday, November 7, 2020

If you are still irked about losing that hour of sleep last March when most of the country went on Daylight Saving Time, here’s some good news – you get it back on Sunday, November 7 when DST ends at 2:00 AM.  You’ll need to set your clocks back (“fall back”) one hour before going to bed on Saturday.

It’s a good idea to REPLACE the batteries in all your smoke and CO2 detectors the same weekend.

Our Annual 2022 Pledge Campaign launched this past Sunday, October 31st!

On Tuesday, our Stewardship Committee and Office Volunteers stuffed our annual appeal letter and pink pledge cards into envelopes and mailed them to everyone in the parish. If you did not receive a stewardship packet in the mail, please contact the office at 760.320.7488 ext. 222 or registrar@stpaulsps.org and we will be happy to assist you.

Our theme this year is Living The Light: Think Pink. The Pink Candle is the Candle of Joy and is lit on the third Sunday of Advent. In a year of new beginnings, we are striving to celebrate life, God’s light, and the joy of being a part of this faith community through our generosity. Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing stories of how your faithful support of St. Paul’s creates room for amazing encounters with the love of God. As we seek to raise our campaign goal of $415,000 in annual pledges, would you consider making St. Paul’s one of your top three recipients of charitable giving this coming year by filling out your pledge card? Would you pray about Think Pink?

There are a variety of ways you can get your pledge card to us:

Of course, there are other ways to practice stewardship. We can give of our time, we can give of our talents, and we can give with other resources. And we can party! On Sunday December 12th, we will all wear as much pink as possible as we in-gather all the pledges. It will be a Pink Sunday like no other! Please join us after the service for a special Coffee Hour where we will have a pink-themed celebration of God’s generosity to us and your generosity to St. Paul’s. You won’t want to miss it! Thank you for considering estimating your gift to St. Paul’s for 2022. In a year filled with so much uncertainty, your act of faith empowers us to continue sharing God’s peace and light with all who come in contact, in-person or virtually, with the special place and people that call St. Paul’s home.

A Message from our Co-Rectors

Dear St. Paul’s Beloved Parishioners,

What a wild and beautiful first month we have had with you all! We are so thankful for all the time and energy and hard work you all have put into our arrival, our welcome, our shared worship and celebration, and our community Fall Festival event. We are so grateful to share this new chapter of St. Paul’s together with you.

YOU are invited to a simple gathering at the home of a parishioner OR in an online Zoom gathering so that you can get to know your new co-rectors and we can get to know you. Eight of these gatherings will be held in November called PATIO PARTIES and you are invited to sign up to attend one. They will be held each Tuesday from 2:00 – 4:00 PM AND ALSO from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the homes of parishioners in outdoor settings. (NOTE: The Patio Party scheduled for November 9 will be a Zoom gathering online, and some new party venues have recently been added.) Here are the details:

As you can see, the theme is “keep it simple,” as we believe the gathering together and hearing and sharing stories is the real magic. It will be a time of celebration, a time of listening, and a time of connecting. We hope to hear your hopes and joys of St. Paul’s and your dreams for the future. These Patio Parties will not only give the two of us a chance to get to know people in a more intimate gathering but will also give you a chance to get to know others you might not know as well. (Plus, we will finally get to see what you all look like under those masks!)

Latino Ministry

The Latino Ministry will be creating a Memorial Altar outside the church in the west side memorial garden.  It will honor people who have recently died from COVID, and other causes.  Please come by the church between October 27 and November 18, to pray for these friends who have left us.  Write their name on a provided card and attach it to the altar. Or bring a copy of their picture for display. A short Service of Thanksgiving will recognize their names on November 18 at noon and also at 5:00 PM.  Social distancing will be observed, and masks required.

Imago Dei:  A Symposium in Spirituality and Sexuality

We’re all invited to this exciting event, an exploration of Queer Faith and the God who thought bodies were so cool to want one!  The symposium will be led by Dr. Peter Carlson, Associate Professor of Religion, Cal Lutheran University, Saturday, November 20, 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM, United Methodist Church, Palm Springs.  Cost: $15.

December Book Club

The next Book Club meeting will be held Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at 1 PM via Zoom. Meeting access information will follow later. For December, Book Club has selected The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles. Emmett Watson is released from a juvenile work farm and discovers that two friends have secretly escaped with him and they make a plan for Emmett’s future. Spanning just ten days in 1954 and told from multiple points of view, this novel has a unique literary style and has an array of richly imagined settings, characters, and themes.

Music News!

Attention singers! Fall is upon us, and we are now regathered in worship on Sunday mornings at 10:30. The Parish Quartet singers have been faithful musicians throughout this past year. In the month of August, they each had a Sunday to sing for you and lead us in praise and prayer. The four members of the quartet are: Denise Rooney, soprano, Diane Burt, alto, Doug Graham, tenor and David Bruns, baritone.

We are now forming a new Mixed Ensemble of 8-12 singers that will be responsible for singing the principal services of the church. It will be a balanced group that will have a regular rehearsal schedule and a Sunday morning commitment. Rehearsals will begin in November. Also, a Men’s Ensemble will be formed this fall.  This group will sing every 6 to 8 weeks at a Sunday morning service. We will schedule two rehearsals to prepare for each Sunday service performance. This schedule will give singers the opportunity to have a few weeks off, and then a few weeks on. Rehearsals will begin in November.  If you are interested in joining either of these ensembles, please join us at a meeting of all singers immediately following our service on Sunday, November 21, in the church.

Join Us For Sunday School Every Week

Sunday School classes for preschool through fifth grade have resumed and will meet every Sunday during the 10:30 AM service.  We start in the church and are invited up front for a special children’s moment with our priests.  Then we head outside to our Sunday School “classroom” on the library porch.

We will be meeting outside to be as protective as possible for everyone’s safety during this pandemic.  All children over the age of 2 will be required to wear a mask if they are inside the church or parish hall. We are not staffing a nursery currently.

Fall Family Festival Appreciation
Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

The Stewardship Committee, along with the Children’s Ministry, would like to thank all ministries who participated and all who volunteered at our recent Fall Family Festival.  We would also like to thank those parishioners who took the time to stop by and show support for the festival.  We all had a good time getting to know people from our surrounding community and introducing them to all we offer here at St. Paul’s.  It was great to see our new Co-Rectors, Rev. Jessie and Rev. Dan, greeting our visitors and parishioners, as well.

The delicious food that Fr. David and his team offered (which of course had no calories for that day!), was enjoyed by all.  A very special thank you also goes to the Melero Family for all their help – especially to Arturo for making those delicious churros.  Thank you also to Roberto Carillo, our Sexton, for all his help in setting up and taking down the tables and tents.  Some of our first-time volunteers were a little surprised to see how much work it takes to make this festival happen.

Lastly, we cannot forget our wonderful firefighters from our neighborhood fire station #1, who participated so enthusiastically.  They showed us all the workings of the fire engine and even let the kids – and the “kids at heart” – sit in the driver’s seat.  In addition, Deana Huff, Children’s Ministry Leader, who arranged the Fire Department participation, received a heartfelt email message from Engine Captain Franco Pineda.  He wrote to tell us how much they enjoyed being part of our festival and to let us know they will always be here for us if they can do anything to help.   They hope we will invite them to participate in next year’s festival or other events we might host here on our campus.

So, all in all, we think our second annual Fall Family Festival was a huge success, thanks to all of you and your hard work.  Rest up, because next year we plan to make it even bigger and better, and it will take all of you and more to make that happen.  Right now, we should be proud of what we did for both our parish and our community!

Training for Altar Ministers, Ushers and Lectors

To prepare for our Advent/Christmas services and a future we dream of with multiple services, we have scheduled training for Altar Ministers and Ushers (who weren’t at the training this past week) on Sunday, December 5, right after service in the church. There will be a separate training session for any remaining lectors (who were not at the training this week) which will be held on Thursday, December 9 at 10:00 AM in the church.

While some might feel they’ve already had training or been doing the ministry for a long time, we still recommend attendance at these sessions.  Now we have new leaders, and we want to make sure we are all on the same page – for both expectations for service, as well as safety precautions and protocols during COVID.  We encourage those who want to be on the serving rota to prioritize the training.

Coffee/Social Hour Hospitality is Back

Regular Coffee Hour hospitality has been reinstated in the Parish Hall following our weekly 10:30 AM Sunday Services.

For those wishing to sponsor refreshments for a specific Sunday, please call or stop by the Parish Office to sign up (760.320.7488).  You can also find the hospitality sign-up book in the Narthex on Sunday mornings.

All our hospitality procedures and protocols are subject to any CDC guidelines and mandates that Bishop Susan may put into place, depending on prevailing COVID conditions.

We have several positions open for ushers. No experience necessary (we will train). All are welcome to apply – men, women, young and mature. We only require that you are friendly, able to stand and walk for short periods, and attend worship services regularly.

Daughters of the King Prayer List Requests

St. Paul’s Order of the Daughters of the King chapter maintains a confidential prayer list, praying daily for our families, friends, congregation, and the world. If you would like to ask the Daughters to pray for you or someone else, email your requests to dokstpaulsps@gmail.com.  Confidentiality of this list means that names on our list are not shared beyond our chapter members and Chaplain.

Members of The Order of the Daughters of the King® are women who desire a closer walk with the Lord. We are Christian women, both lay and ordained, who are strengthened through the discipline of a Rule of Life, and supported through the companionship of our sisters. All women of St. Paul’s who seek deeper spiritual life and inspiration in prayer and Christian fellowship are invited to learn more about becoming a member. Sunday Service Livestreaming

The live stream project has been a one-year journey coming to St. Paul’s and was made possible through a generous gift from a “snowbird” member from Philadelphia who wintered in Palm Springs for many years and worshiped at St. Paul’s every Sunday.

Revised COVID Protocol for Indoor Worship

Due to the recent spike in COVID cases in our area, Bishop Susan has issued this appeal to all clergy in our diocese.

Jesus commands us to love our neighbors, which includes doing what we can to keep them and ourselves safe in a public health crisis. With regret, due to the spike in Covid cases in our area, I am asking you to reinstate mask-wearing for all (except while reading or preaching) for indoor worship in our diocese.

I have so enjoyed our brief respite from most restrictions in worship. Like all of you, I hoped and prayed that the drop in Covid cases we saw earlier in the summer would prove to be the end of the pandemic. Sadly, the choice of many people in our area to remain unvaccinated is allowing the pandemic to continue. Given the fact that children and some people with health conditions cannot yet be vaccinated, and that even vaccinated adults can catch breakthrough cases (albeit with far better outcomes than unvaccinated people), it seems that the responsible thing to do is keep ourselves safe with masking during indoor worship. I am saddened by the need to tighten restrictions once more, but this message comes after review of the concerning news of a Covid spike, and after discussion with members of our Public Health Task Force.

I ask you to join me in prayer that the current growth in cases is short-lived, and I ask you to urge your members to be vaccinated, for the sake of public health in our community. I hope we can remove the masking requirement soon. But for now, I believe that Jesus’ command to love our neighbor compels us to do what we can to protect our neighbors and our community from this disease. I am grateful to all of you for your leadership in this trying time.

Compassionate Care Task Force

Our diocesan task force on compassionate care for victims of clergy sexual misconduct seeks to connect with those who have experienced misconduct. If you have reported clergy sexual misconduct and have information about the reporting or post-reporting experience that could be helpful to their work, please refer to the task force members, all of whom are listed on the diocesan website: Task-Force. As part of our ongoing commitment to creating a safe haven for everyone, our diocese trains people in the prevention of misconduct and encourages all to report misconduct. All reported incidences are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly and confidentially. Bullying Behavior Not Welcome Here

At St. Paul in the Desert we welcome all worshipers to a place that is free of violence and bullying.

Physical, verbal or emotional violence against others or against oneself is not acceptable because of our understanding of what it means to follow Jesus.  Please let Jesus’ command to love your neighbor as yourself be your guide.

“It Gets Better” is a series of video messages to encourage Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, or Transgender youth and let them know that they are loved as they are.

“A Blessing for Those Who Are Bullied” was written by the Rt. Rev. Steven Charleston, a Bishop of the Episcopal Church.

It is not enough to say “NO” to bullies. It is important to stand up for people and to provide resources for those who have been the targets.

Fraud Email Alert

A recurring threat to churches is email-based impersonation scams targeting key personnel. The scheme involves cybercriminals mimicking clergy or other staff through the use of phishing emails. Criminals typically pose as personnel in positions of authority and ask victims to perform money transfers, pay invoices, or to send the attacker sensitive data. Scammers will often manipulate the “from” email address and name so that it appears to be coming from someone you know.

Churches and dioceses across The Episcopal Church and across other denominations have been a target of these email impersonation attacks. Scammers use a free email account (such as Gmail) and register it with an impersonated name. They then send an email to an unsuspecting recipient asking for immediate help in order to get a task done (such as purchasing a gift card or wiring money). Attention to detail can be a lot of help in combating cases of impersonation. Users should check sender details carefully. Any suspicious email message should be investigated before replying. Also, proper attention should be given to the message content, including attachments and URLs.

While there is no way to stop these scams, you can minimize risk by taking these steps:

  • Check the return email address. If the address doesn’t match the name of the sender, be wary.
  • Never open attachments from unknown sources.
  • Be wary of generically addressed emails like “Dear Friend” or Dear Customer.”
  • If there are links in the email, hover over them without clicking on them. This will show where the link will actually take you.
  • Be wary of email with grammatical or spelling errors in the text.
  • Check the address at the bottom of the email. If it says ”Pastor Jim” and Jim never goes by “Pastor,” it’s fake.

Finally, if after all these steps it looks safe and the sender is asking for money or access to secure data, call the person directly to get verification.

Your best defense for this is to simply delete the email; do not click on any links or reply to the sender.
